It is a part of Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth University, deemed university. Mahatma Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute is approved by the Medical Council of India (MCI), New Delhi and recognized by the Government of Pondicherry.

The college also offers diploma courses in the field of medical science.
